Colombian police find 300kg of marijuana in coffin during routine border check

Colombian cops who stopped a car at a border post were shocked when they found a wooden coffin in the back containing nearly half a tonne of weed.

When police discovered the coffin during a check in the Santander area they ordered it be opened so they could ensure it contained a body.

But instead of a corpse, they discovered it contained 300 kilograms of marijuana.

The smugglers had hoped the drugs - worth hundreds of thousands of pounds on the streets- would be safe inside the coffin.

Colombia was once the centre for the cultivation of the plant before the cannabis was smuggled all over the world.

However, these days countries are also buying marijuana for medicinal purposes.

Colombian police displayed the coffin and the drugs today after the unusual find.

Regional police commander Fabian Ospina said: "The seizure was carried out after an inspection of a hearse, which contained two coffins.

Police arrested the driver and have kept him in for questioning.
