Cologne shooting and stabbing: Two on the run after knife and gun attack

Two suspects are on the run after a knife and shooting attack in Cologne, local media has reported.

One person was injured in the attack near Rudolfplatz in the early hours of Monday morning, the Koelner Express reported.

The paper said several people told police shortly before 4am local time three or four people seemed to be having problems with another man, with eyewitnesses reporting seeing men attacking each other with axes.

A man who sustained a stab wound tried to flee in his car but other men shot at him, though they only hit the car.

Police spokeswoman Cathrine Maus said a number of callers reported the incident involving several people in downtown Cologne before 4am. She said a man was admitted to the hospital with serious injuries, and there was no immediate information on the nature of his injuries.

Officers arriving at the scene found shattered glass and a substance that looked like blood.

Two possible perpetrators were later stopped by police.

The motive for the attack is currently unknown.

Germany has been on edge after several attacks in the last month.
