Colm Meaney admits he had no idea what 'It's Always Sunny' was when he guest starred in it

Top actor Colm Meaney admits he had no idea what hit show 'It’s Always Sunny' was when he was asked to appear in it.

In 2021, the Star Trek actor made a guest appearance on season 15 of the hit show, which follows a group of friends, known as The Gang, who own Paddy’s Pub, an Irish bar in the Pennsylvanian capital of Philadelphia.

But Meaney told us he had no idea what show he was signing up for at the time.

The Dubliner told us: “It was fun. I actually was asked to do it and I was like ‘what is that?’ My agent and management was like ‘Colm, really? Where do you live?’ It's been on for 15 years, it’s a huge hit but I have never seen it but then Danny DeVito – that was the draw for me. I’ve known Danny over the years and he’s always a bit of fun.”

The show saw Meaney strike up a friendship with Charlie Day’s character, also called Charlie. The pair head to a cheese shop before they visit a graveyard to see the burial place of a man named Michael Kelly. Meaney’s character says of Michael “[he] died eating rocks which he thought were eggs.”

Meaney jetted into Dublin on Sunday to attend this year’s IFTAs.

The Snapper star is set to star alongside his daughter Brenda in Enda Walsh's acclaimed play Bedbound.

Opening up about working with his daughter, he said: “Yeah for my sins,” he said laughing.

“My daughter, she is in New York. She is an actress, and she brought this play to me late last year with a director attached. It’s a wonderful piece of writing.

“I shouldn’t have read it. Once I read it… it's lovely writing.

“So we start rehearsal at the end of the month and hopefully it’ll go to the arts festival and then we’ll bring it to Dublin to the Olympia for a week.”

He said he wasn’t worried about working with his talented daughter, saying: “Don’t worry, she’ll tell me what to do. You know what daughters are like.”

He said he used to travel to her acting school to watch her performances.

“I’ve watched her. I used to up and watch the two or three shows a year or whatever they were doing. I saw how she grew and developed as an actress. I’m actually really looking forward to working with her because she is terrific and it’s just the two of us so we’ve only each other to blame if it goes wrong,” he added.
