Collins Dictionary releases list of new and notable words

Collins Dictionary has announced it is recognising the word 'non-binary' and also naming 'climate strike' as its Word of the Year 2019.

Clmate Strike has been recognised after the efforts of young protester Greta Thunburg who hit the headlines this summer.

The word 'non-binary' has been defined as 'relating to a gender or sexual identity that does not conform to the binary categories of male or female, heterosexual or homosexual'.

The reasoning behind the addition of the new word is to recognise the 'changes in how people relate to each other and define themselves'.

Laura Russell, the director of campaigns at Stonewall, LGBT charity,  has praised the move.

'It's great that Collins will officially be adding non-binary to their dictionary.' She said.

'Non-binary people have always existed in every community, so it's important more organisations and people use language that includes everyone and recognises who they are.'

Over recent years there has been a growing rise in the number of people identifying as on-binary including some high profile celebrities such as the singer Sam Smith where he asked the public to refer to him as they or them.

Collins has also recognised the term bopo (body positive) in reaction to those believe people should be proud of their bodies no matter their shape or size.

The word 'climate-strike'  was first recognised back in November 2015 after the first 'climate-strike' occurred during the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris.

The concerns of the public towards the climate are increasing each year and after Greta Thunburg's school strikes outside of the Swedish parliament the movement has gained momentum.

Collins has also added the term 'rewilding', the practice of returning land to a wild state, 'double down' describes those who "refuse to give ground" rather than admit a mistake, with 'cancelled' defined as "publicly ceasing to acknowledge a person, organisation, on social media, in order to express disapproval of their activities or opinions'.

The term 'influencer', the TV genre of 'hopepunk' and 'deepfakes', the digital imaging technique, have also been added by Collins.
