Collingwood to challenge ban for key defender

Collingwood will challenge the three-game suspension handed out to Billy Frampton for the defender's tackle that hurt Melbourne forward Brody Mihocek.

Frampton will front the tribunal on Wednesday night trying to escape his rough conduct ban.

The second-quarter tackle on Mihocek, his former Magpies teammate, was classed as careless, severe impact and high contact by the match review officer.

Mihocek faces an uncertain playing future after suffering a fractured neck in the incident during the King's Birthday match.

Play was held up for 10 minutes before the Collingwood premiership player was taken off the ground and sent to hospital in an ambulance.

After having surgery on Monday night, Mihocek is recovering well and already walking.

If the Pies are unsuccessful at the tribunal, Frampton will miss games against Port Adelaide, Richmond and Gold Coast.

Collingwood defender Harry Perryman felt for Mihocek and Frampton.

"A lot of us are good mates with Checkers (Mihocek) and we just hope he's OK," Perryman told AAP.

"We wrapped our arms around Billy because he was pretty rattled by it all."
