Collingwood forward Jack Ginnivan will play his first AFL game of the season on Sunday after being banned during the pre-season for using an illicit drug.

Ginnivan will make his AFL comeback against St Kilda at Adelaide Oval in the final fixture of the Gather Round.

The 20-year-old was suspended for two games by the AFL after admitting using an illicit drug during a Collingwood training camp in January.

"He will come in and play a role and we're excited to see what he can do," Magpies coach Craig McRae told reporters on Friday.

"I did notice him walking up and down my hallway during the week a couple more times than what he normally does, sort of looking for a sign where's he's at.

"It has been a journey for him.

"This is whatever it is now, six or seven weeks, of looking for opportunity and trying to make himself a better person.

"And now he gets a chance to do that on the footy field."

Since serving his suspension, Ginnivan has played two VFL games for the Pies and McRae was particularly impressed by his efforts last weekend in a heavy away loss to Brisbane.

""The GPS on the weekend was the thing we looked at, it was a tough performance for the VFL up in Queensland, but the GPS said he was playing at levels that we needed from him, AFL-type standard running," McRae said.

"And he is going to get an opportunity to go and do that now."

While Ginnivan is a certain starter, wingman Will Hoskin-Elliott is in doubt for the clash against the undefeated Saints due to illness.
