Collingwood AFL player Jordan De Goey to 'vigorously defend himself' after being charged in the United States

Collingwood AFL player Jordan De Goey has released a statement via his lawyer which says he intends to "vigorously defend himself" after being charged in the United States.

De Goey was arrested in New York over the weekend following an alleged incident at a rooftop bar.

Police had charged him with groping a 35-year-old woman, however prosecutors are not pursuing the charge.

De Goey is still facing assault offences after being accused of punching and kicking a 37-year-old man.

He has pleaded not guilty and is due before court on December 8.

De Goey said he could not speak about the incident in New York, "or make comment on the current legal matters that are still ongoing".

But the statement from his US-based lawyer Jacob Kaplan — distributed by the AFL Players' Association — said De Goey wanted to fight the charges.

"Mr De Goey intends to vigorously defend himself against these unwarranted charges," the statement read.

"Despite the original media reports otherwise, Mr De Goey has not been charged with forcible touching or any other sexual assault crimes against a woman.

The assault is alleged to have occurred at the PHD Rooftop Lounge at the Dream Hotel in New York's Chelsea district in the early hours of Saturday morning local time.

De Goey's due date in court is two days after Collingwood's preseason training program is scheduled to begin.

On Sunday, a Collingwood spokesperson said the club would "continue to pay De Goey under the terms of his contract until such time as an outcome to proceedings against him in the United States is reached or a more complete account of events is established".

De Goey will not be permitted to train or play with Collingwood or make use of club resources, staff or facilities while legal proceedings continue.
