Colleges reopen in Kerala, students start flocking back to campus

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Colleges in the state, mainly the arts and science ones, were partially opened for academic activities on Monday after a long shutdown brought in by the Covid-19 pandemic. Many of these campuses had opened in January after the first Covid wave but suspended the offline classes in March owing to the second wave of the pandemic.

Classes for the final-year degree and postgraduate students began on Monday while the rest of the classes are scheduled to begin on October 18. Over 99% college teachers and a large section of students have got two doses of Covid vaccines but online classes are likely to continue as the pandemic has made the "hybrid" mode of learning a new normal.

Daily classes are offered for PG students while UG students will have classes on alternate days. The government has given three timeslot options to college authorities for organising classes.

She also stressed the need to carry out campaigns on gender justice and awareness programmes on violence against women, while referring to the recent murder of a college student by her classmate in Pala.
