TRICHY: A 20-year-old college student was killed and 46 sustained injuries in a road accident after a private bus in which they travelled had overturned in the Ariyalur district on Monday.
Police said that the private bus was operating between Jayankondam in Ariyalur district and Thuraiyur in Trichy district via Perambalur district. On Monday morning, the private bus with around 50 passengers on board was proceeding towards Thuraiyur town. While approaching Rayampuram village near Sendurai, the bus deviated from the carriageway and overturned on the space adjacent to the road dug for a road widening project.
Locals rushed to the spot and rescued the passengers stuck inside the bus. Since the entry and exit were blocked as the bus overturned, passengers were rescued through windows and by breaking the rear glass pane. A total of 46 passengers were injured, and they were admitted to Ariyalur and Thanjavur government medical college hospitals.
One V Karthikeyan, a student of Ariyalur government arts college who sustained grievous injuries had succumbed even before being admitted to the Ariyalur government hospital. Sendurai police have registered a case and are investigating.
