College pays tribute to 'young man of promise' after tragic shooting in Kanturk, Co Cork

Cork Institute of Technology has paid tribute following the loss of recent graduate Diarmuid O'Sullivan in horror triple shooting on Monday.

Tadgh O’Sullivan, 59, and his sons Mark, 26, and 23-year-old Diarmuid were all found with gunshots wounds at their home near Kanturk.

Armed gardai had surrounded their house after being alerted to a possible hostage situation shortly after 6.30am, Cork Beo reports.

Diarmuid (22) had been due to be conferred next week with a First Class Honours degree in Accounting after completing his studies in the summer.

His brother Mark was a graduate from UCC.

He is survived by his mother Ann, who ran from the isolated farmhouse at Assolas in the early hours of the morning to raise the alarm.

Tributes continue to flood in as the small community has been left in a state of shock following the tragic incident.

Speaking this morning, Dr Dan Collins, Head of Student Affairs, noted that the entire CIT Community were in shock as news of the tragic deaths unfolded yesterday.

He said: “There are no words anyone can say to express how people are feeling. This tragedy is heart-breaking, and we extend our thoughts and sympathy to his mother, Ann.

"We also keep in our thoughts, and prayers, his brother Mark and his father Tadgh.

"We are mindful at this time of his friends, classmates, and staff of the Department of Accounting and Information Systems, as well as the extended family and neighbours.”

Dr Collins said staff who knew Diarmuid during his time at CIT described him as a young man with promise, who was a hard worker, respected, and held in high regard by staff and students alike.

The investigation into the events at the farmhouse in Assolas continues today with An Garda Síochána appealing to any person who may have any information which may assist in the investigation of the incidents which occurred this morning to contact investigating Garda at Mallow Garda Station 022 31450, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
