College lecturer tore door from its hinges

A senior education officer ripped a bedroom door from its hinges during a disturbance at the family home.

James Jamieson was suffering stress at work and his marriage had deteriorated, Hamilton Sheriff Court heard last week.

Jamieson, 49, was fined £300 after he admitted threatening or abusive behaviour at his home in Tannochside, on June 1.

The court was told that he barged into a bedroom where his wife was sleeping and demanded to know where his wedding ring was.

His grown-up daughter heard a commotion from her room and asked Jamieson to be quiet as she was on a video call.

He swore at her and shoved the door of her room so hard it came off the hinges.

Defence agent Tony Callahan said first offender Jamieson had “no criminal history whatsoever”.

He told the court that the couple have been married for six years. Mr Callahan stated: “Mr Jamieson accepts that he was significantly to blame because of stress in his employment.

“They have now reconciled and resolved their difficulties. The whole episode has had a salutary effect and he is remorseful.”

Sheriff Daniel Kelly told Jamieson: “Instances of domestic violence are taken seriously by the court. A door pulled from its hinges indicates the intensity of this situation and it must have been alarming for your partner and daughter.

“It seems that you have been under pressure and have taken steps to address that, but it is important to bring
home the serious nature of this matter.

“You will be fined £300, reduced from £400 because of your guilty plea.”
