College issues update on coronavirus cases as numbers begin to fall

A college in Nottingham has recorded "fewer than 200" cases of Covid-19 since students returned to lessons in September.

Nottingham College, which has numerous campuses across the city, announced the rough figure to Nottinghamshire Live on Wednesday (November 18).

A spokesperson for the college added it has a "decreasing number" of new cases recorded at its sites, in line with the week-on-week figures for the rest of the city.

The college confirmed at the end of September that three of its campuses had been affected by cases in one week. These were the Maid Marian Way, Basford and Clarendon sites.

Speaking on its most recent figure numbers, the college says it has "stringent measures" in place across its campuses.

A spokesperson said: "Nottingham College, in accordance with Government guidance, has remained open throughout the Covid pandemic, which took hold back in March.

"Since then, we have implemented a number of stringent measures, across all campuses, and everyone within our college community is well aware of what to do to keep themselves and others safe and well.

"We have a robust process in place to manage Covid cases within our college community.

"We are grateful for all staff and students who have adapted to the protective measures we’ve implemented and who take seriously their responsibility for their own, and others’ wellbeing.

"We have kept case levels to a minimum and in turn have managed to keep our college open and operational from the outset.

"The college keeps a central log of all confirmed cases affecting members of staff, our students and also our partner providers (including those outside of the city).

"So far we have recorded fewer than 200 cases, amongst a community of more than 30,000 people.

"We are seeing a decreasing number of confirmed cases, from our peak, which is tracking with Nottingham’s case pattern overall."

More than 80 schools and education providers have recorded Covid-19 cases since the start of term in September.

Most recently, Quarrydale Academy in Sutton-in-Ashfield was forced to close for a week due to rising infection levels.
