College hiring wine cellar assistant despite Covid cash crisis in universities

A Cambridge college is shrugging off the Covid cash crisis hitting universities... by hiring a wine cellar assistant.

The £9.17-an-hour aide will “assist in the efficient execution of wine cellar operations and professional delivery of service” at the uni’s Gonville & Caius College, founded in 1348.

They will report to the college fellows’ butler to ensure the right vintages are served to 1,100 students and staff.

Chris McGovern, of the Campaign for Real Education, said: “Whilst most universities are, financially, staring down the barrel, Caius College appears to be focusing its attention on drinking the barrel dry.”

The post, 20 hours a week, comes as 140 UK universities spent £600million on pandemic measures.

Many lost £10million in rent refunds.

The college, where Prof Stephen Hawking was a don, was approached for comment.
