College Green building once home to Fopp music store being sold off by Bristol City Council

The old Fopp music and book store building on College Green has been put up for sale by the local authority.

Bristol City Council is selling the property, which includes the large double-fronted shop unit at ground-floor level and three floors of office space above, on a 125-year lease.

The building overlooks City Hall and is in a conservation area, but is being advertised as having “potential for conversion to alternative use” subject to consent.

The authority will retain the freehold of the block, according to real estate company Avison Young.

This means they will keep some control over the building and any tenant will need permission to convert it. The shop, however, will have a separate lease and will remain as a retail unit.

The council will also receive rent from the building, which will be around five per cent of the full value of the property, which has not been disclosed. They will also get rental income from the lease of the shop.

Paul Williams, director at Avison Young said: “This is such a distinctive property, formerly occupied by Fopp Records, in the centre of the city.

“It’s close to a wide range of independent retailers, bars, restaurants and other leisure uses in one of the city’s most vibrant locations.

“As such it provides a fantastic opportunity for someone to put their mark on it through an outstanding refurbishment.”
