Everything is changing amid the COVID-19 pandemic. We’ve got a patchwork of things happening across college football. Some schools and leagues have decided to shut things down, other conferences have gone to a league-only schedule, and others built-in delays to the schedule to accommodate potential disruptions and rescheduling.
Because of all the change and potential later conference championship games, the College Football Playoff has revised the date of the last set of rankings to determine the four teams that make it to the CFP to a later one.
The original release of the last rankings were set for December December 6, but now they have been moved back to December 20.
“With recent schedule changes for the regular season, it makes sense for the committee to make its final rankings after the conference championship games, when it can get a complete picture of the season,” executive director Bill Hancock said in a release. “The selection committee members understand the need to be flexible as we all navigate uncharted waters this season, and this move will allow them to evaluate all the available information.”
A couple of things with this. First, the College Football Playoff is still on it appears. Secondly, it’s a good move to wait and allow things to play out, but it also means that that the timeline and preparation between the last conference championship games and playoff games might be condensed. But hey, if that’s what it takes to get the season it, almost everyone will live with that.
As a reminder, the two playoff games this year involve the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl on January 1. The winners of those two games are set to meet in Miami on January 11. That isn’t changing at this point.
