5. College Football News Preview 2020: Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Offense 3 Things To Know

The offense had its style. It might not have always put up big points, and there were too many power outages, but the running game was good, the team controlled the clock, and the offensive line came up with a solid year. With four starters back, this should be among the best O lines in the Sun Belt despite a lack of raw bulk at anywhere but right guard.

CJ Marable might not be all that big, but he was a workhorse for the offense at times. The 5-10, 190-pounder ran for 1,085 yards and 11 touchdowns, but he wasn’t alone, There’s a deep group behind him with all the other top backs underclassmen last season. Throw in JUCO transfer Shermari Jones, and the ground attack that averaged almost 200 yards per game should be even better.

The quarterback situation is fine. Junior Bryce Carpenter was second on the team in rushing and threw eight touchdown passes with two picks, Fred Payton led the team with 1,421 yards and made more things happen down the field, and either one can produce.

Almost all of the top wide receivers are back. There wasn’t a ton of explosion – the O averaged only 11 yards per catch – but the quarterbacks worked the ball around well. Marable was a threat out of the backfield, junior Jaivon Heiligh great into a reliable target, ad Isaiah Likely turned into a factor at tight end. They’re all back.

4. College Football News Preview 2020: Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Defense 3 Things To Know

The offense might have had its moments, but it wasn’t consistent enough. The defense wasn’t bad, but it got ripped apart by the better Sun Belt offenses – the Chanticleers went 1-6 when the D allowed 30 points or more. With eight starters back, this should be the program’s best defense since moving up to the FBS level.

The pass rush wasn’t all that great, and the defense didn’t do enough to get into the backfield, but senior Tarron Jackson is back after coming up with a massive season. The 270-pound defensive end is the tone-setter, and CJ Brewer is a nice 280-pounder who can get behind the line, too. There’s good size around the front three to rotate in.

240-pound senior and former JUCO transfer Teddy Gallagher was the team’s leading tackler as the anchor of the linebacking corps, but he’s not alone with 230-pound Myles Olufemi adding a little thump, too.

The way-young secondary of last season should be a whole lot sharper and stronger. They didn’t make a whole lot of tackles with the front six doing most of the heavy lifting, but there are enough good-sized safeties to help out a bit more. However, five of the team’s 11 interceptions are gone with Chandler Kryst done.

Best Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Offensive Player

RB CJ Marable, Sr.
A former FCS star, he made the step up as a sophomore with 719 yards and six scores in 2018. Last year, he became an even bigger part of the offensive puzzle with 1,085 yards and 11 scores, and finished second on the team with 38 grabs with three touchdowns. Ultra-quick, he can be used as a return man, too.

2. OG Trey Carter, Sr.
3. WR Jaivon Heiligh, Jr.
4. TE Isaiah Likely, Jr.
5. QB Bryce Carpenter, Jr.

Best Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Defensive Player

DE Tarron Jackson, Sr.
The 6-2, 270-pounder isn’t built like your normal pass rusher, but he’s a do-it-all all-star who’s been the main man for the defensive front over the last few years.

He followed up a 58-tackle, 11 tackle-for-loss with 60 stops, ten sacks, and 13 tackles for loss as he became more of a closer on the quarterback. Good in the classroom, he’s an All-Academic Sun Belt star, too.

2. LB Teddy Gallagher, Sr.
3. DE CJ Brewer, Sr.
4. S Kameron Burton, Jr.
5. LB Cincir Evans, Soph.

College Football News Preview 2020: Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Keys To The Season

Biggest Key To The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Offense

More downfield passing would be a big plus. One of the main focuses of the offense is the way it controls the tempo and the clock, and that comes with not taking a whole lot of shots down the field. However, it would be nice to get a few more big plays to open things up.

The Chanticleers only averaged 7.1 yards per pass attempt. The 21 touchdowns and nine interceptions were good, there wasn’t enough big play consistency.

Biggest Key To The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Defense

Generate more third down stops. The Chanticleers were great at controlling the clock and keeping the ball, but they didn’t do much to get a steady pass rush outside of anything coming from the line. There also weren’t enough big plays from the secondary.

The D struggled to slow down drives, allowing offenses to convert close to 47% of their chances. CCU allowed teams to convert 50% of the time or more in five of the last eight games.

Key Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Player To A Successful Season

CB Jordan Morris, Soph.
The Chanticleers need more out of their quarterbacks with more big plays from the passing game, and more help for the pass rush outside of Tarron Jackson and CJ Brewer would be a plus, but the corners have to come up with more stops.

Morris is a tall, thin baller who got thrown into the mix late in the year and finished with 15 tackles. With Chandler Kryst and his five picks gone, the D needs a new star.

Key Game To The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Season

Arkansas State, Oct. 3
It’s.a rough early Sun Belt run with four games against four teams that went bowling last year, and none of them are Appalachian State – that comes later. The Arkansas State game is an interdivisional battle, but lose and there’s a problem with a trip to Louisiana to follow.

ASU has been an issue since CCU moved into the Sun Belt in the three years, losing all three. The first two were ugly – dropping the two by a combined score of 95-33 – but last year was a 28-27 battle.

1. College Football News Preview 2020: Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Win Total Prediction, What Will Happen

It’s been a painful two years for the program that can’t quite get over the hump.

The 2018 team had four chances to get bowl eligible, and lost all four of them in a 5-7 season. Last year’s team had a rough midseason run of six losses in seven games to miss out in another 5-7 run.

This year’s team has the upside to finally get over the hump.

The offense should be the best it’s been in the three years in the FBS world, and the defense is at least experienced. Overall, there’s reason to finally hope for a bowl game, but …

Bet at BetMGM Win Total Line: 4.5

Can the Chanticleers actually beat Kansas in Conway? They won in Lawrence last year 12-9, but with a trip to South Carolina, and a toss-up at Eastern Michigan, there’s a shot at a 1-3 start before going into a tough start to the Sun Belt.

They’ll come up with one big conference win along the way, but figure in losses to the Gamecocks, Jayhawks, at Louisiana and – at best – a road split against Troy and Georgia State. Throw in the Appalachian State game, and it’ll take something major to get to six wins.
