What an opening week to start off in college football. There were some big upsets highlighted by Georgia State shocking Tennessee on the road and South Carolina was upset by Mack Brown’s UNC Tar Heels. This week, we take a look at No. 1 Clemson hosting No. 12 Texas A&M, No. 6 LSU taking on No. 10 Texas and No. 25 Stanford at USC. Winners And Whiners’ chief editor Ben Hayes takes a closer look and make some picks.
*Clemson beat Texas A&M last season on the road, but by just two points. Jimbo Fisher understands how to beat a Dabo Swinney squad due to his days at Florida State. Junior QB Kellen Mond gives the Aggies a chance and they’ll easily cover the 17.5 on the road from Death Valley.
*LSU sends a new hurry-up, no huddle spread offense to Austin with Joe Burrow, who threw five TD passes last week against Georgia Southern, handling the duties. Texas rolled over Louisiana Tech in their first game, but they did have to replace eight starters on defense. Is Texas for real? There’s nothing like a top-10 home dog with a chip on their shoulder. Take the Longhorns in a close battle.
*USC faces No. 25 Stanford and there is a concern at the quarterback position for both teams. The situation at Stanford is a bit better as K.J. Costello was knocked out on the last game, but the Cardinal can grind it out with the best of them. Their defense forced four turnovers against Northwestern last week and now they take on a true freshman quarterback in Kedon Slovis. Go with Stanford on the road.
