There are some semi-smart people out there loving the idea of Miami against Pitt, but there’s no football-related reason for it. Pitt is playing well and Miami isn’t, but it should be a low-scoring game that should make you sweat the 5.5 the Panthers are giving away just a little bit. This rocketed up from -2, but Miami’s QB situation is too much of a mess right now to think about taking the Canes.

Has Syracuse shown you anything yet to think it can hang with any team on the road? No, the Orange have been awful – the O line is a disaster – and Florida State desperately needs a strong, emphatic performance. Has Florida State shown you anything yet to think it can win by more than ten? Like Syracuse, and LOVE the under on the 59.

Louisville is good enough to go bowling, it’s playing well enough on both sides of the ball to hang with or beat anyone in the ACC besides Clemson, and … don’t mess with this. Virginia is the far better team – even if it hasn’t played like it yet – with a D line that will live in the Cardinal backfield. Be sure to thank the public for only keeping this at Cavs -3.

ALWAYS mock and ridicule anyone who says something lazy and boring like, “throw out the record books, it’s a rivalry game” … throw out the record books on this one, because the rivalry aspect really does matter here. North Carolina keeps playing close game after close game, and it stinks that the line went from Tar Heels -4.5 down to 3.5 – three in some places. Duke is better and go with it with the points if you have to, but … stay away. This year, it’s way too quirky of a rivalry matchup.

You’re not wrong if you really like Clemson to obliterate Boston College, because it will. The Eagles don’t have QB Anthony Brown around, it’s AJ Dillon or bust, and this isn’t the BC D of the past. Even so, the 34.5 is WAY too high. Clemson is in score a lot-win-move on mode, but it doesn’t seem to care about making statements right now. Remember, even a 44-10 total wipeout doesn’t get it done.

Warning … I can’t seem to get Oklahoma right this year, so take this with a few grains of salt. You’re not wrong to not think and just throw – taking the Sooners and giving away the points no matter what against Kansas State – but the line has gone up from 19.5 to 23.5 against a Wildcat team at home that knows how to make teams play at its level. This might be more dangerous than you think.

Warning No. 2 … I’ve whiffed on the two “you’ve GOT to be kidding” lines this year that seemed too good to be true. I thought Maryland would annihilate Temple – it lost – and Virginia had no business not stomping Miami into the ground, and didn’t. With that said, Texas-TCU was a joke when it opened at TCU -2.5, and it remains silly with the Longhorns only at -1. This just seems way, way, way too obvious … and that’s what scares me.

Warning No. 3 … I’m still not there with Kansas. I’m aware that Texas Tech isn’t playing all that well, and I know that Kansas is at home, but it’s still … Kansas. If you like the Red Raiders, get in fast, because the world is POUNDING them. This went from Texas Tech -8 to open, down to 3.5, and back up to five as the market has overcorrected itself twice.

It seems like the Iowa State bubble is overdue to burst, and it seems like Oklahoma State is way overdue to get something out of its miserable defense. Until either of those things happens, it’s so hard not to think the Cyclones will run away and hide against this Cowboy D. 10.5 seems like a whole lot to give away to such a flaky OSU team with so much offense, so tread lightly, but … it’s the right call.

You’re not necessarily wrong no matter what you think about Ohio State and Wisconsin. So, you think the Buckeyes are going to blow the doors off the Badgers by more than two touchdowns? It’s hardly crazy. So, you think Wisconsin is going to pound away and make this interesting, or show up like it did against Michigan and Michigan State? You’re not crazy. The 14.5 the Buckeyes are getting seems a bit high, but again, if you don’t agree, you’re not crazy.

Yuck, yuck, triple-yuck. If you’re willingly watching Iowa and Northwestern when Wisconsin-Ohio State is going on, you’re doing it on a dare. The line has gone down to Iowa -9.5, but Northwestern has a way of keeping games low scoring and boring for everyone. All Iowa has to do is score two touchdowns and it might have this easily. The under on the 37 is technically the right play, but … quadruple yuck.

That Wisconsin win by Illinois was obviously terrific, but it can’t be a one-off. Lose to Purdue, and last week was a total aberration. Beat the Boilermakers, and this Illini thing is for real. The public has weighed in, and it has Purdue -10. Illinois should be getting a whole lot more respect than that.

So a Big Ten team is getting 7.5 points. At home. To Liberty. There’s so much crazy happening here. Liberty isn’t good at college football and shouldn’t be a 7.5 point favorite against anybody, but Rutgers really, really, really, really can’t score. The craziest part? That 7.5 might be ridiculously low.

Unfortunately, the world has figured this one out. Penn State is very good, but it’s also coming off a rough run of physical and emotional battles. Michigan State has had two weeks off to rest up, and it’s a whole lot better than it showed against Ohio State and Wisconsin. You’d have liked this better at Penn State -7, but it’s being hammered down to five. You’re okay either way considering the Spartans are way overdue to win something like this outright.

I saw the Maryland win over Syracuse, and despite mountains of evidence to prove just how fake that blowout was, I can’t shake it. I also can’t shake that Minnesota hasn’t beaten anyone who’s any good at college football. The world already has the Gophers at 8-0 going into the Penn State showdown in two weeks, but Maryland has its main guys back in the backfield, and it’s getting 16 – 16.5 in some places. You not need any of those points coming your way, but if they’re going to give them to you, take them.

Big Ten Throwing Dart At Board Analysis, Part 1. Indiana is okay. It’s offense has pop and explosion, and the defense has been just good enough to get by. It’s on the cusp of being bowl eligible, but it has to get by a Nebraska team that has – at best – an iffy Adrian Martinez, no real defense, and a whole lot of zzzzzzzzz factor for a team that’s supposed to be fun. The line is sort of irrelevant – it started at IU -2 and is now Huskers -2 – but the Hoosiers are just plain better. If that sort of garbled, wishy-washy, pick-a-lane-already thing didn’t wasn’t enough for you …

Big Ten Throwing Dart At Board Analysis, Part 2. As the ultimate Jim Harbaugh apologist, I hate jumping on board with the reality that, yeah, he needs to win more big games, and this is one of them against Notre Dame. Strip away all of the outside noise, and it might be just this easy – the Irish have had two weeks off, and Michigan is coming off the emotional fight against Penn State. It’s basically a PICK game, but we know Notre Dame can hang in a game like this, and we’re not sure if Michigan can.

USC just isn’t good on the road this year going 0-3, and it’s amazing at home. It’s going to be cold in Boulder – it might literally be half the temperature it is in LA right now – it’s a crazy Friday night game, and 11.5 is way too much. USC is far better than the Buffs, but the Buffs are also overdue not to suck.

Arizona vs. Stanford is just bad on bad crime right now. The Cardinal aren’t playing well, but QB KJ Costello might be back. The Wildcats aren’t playing well, but they seem like they need a tweak more than an overhaul. It’s a PICK game, but both are so flaky that you HAVE to stay away. If you just can’t, take the cooler of the hot mess and go with the Wildcats – but VERY, VERY lightly.

The results might not quite be there yet, but UCLA is playing better than you think. However, it’s only getting three against an Arizona State team that’s way, way, way better than three points against these Bruins. With all of that said, the Sun Devils are stomped last week by Utah and the D has started to fade a bit … there’s going to be an interesting narrative either way.

Is it possible to set a point total at 1? Cal and Utah should wage enough of a defensive war to not totally blow off the ridiculous-low total of 36.5, especially because there’s a chance one side won’t score. The Bears are a mess offensively, and Utah is playing really, really well, but be careful. The Utes could win this in totally dominant fashion and not do it by three touchdowns.

How much love and respect is being given to a bad Washington State team? The Cougars are all flashy and fun and Mike Leach-ey, but they’re also not that good – don’t get caught up in the 41-10 blasting of Colorado. Oregon is that good, and the defense might just shut down the Cougars to a dead stop. The line has settled in at Ducks -14, and that might still be at least a touchdown too low.

Will Texas A&M ever be interesting? It’s slow, it’s boring, and it hasn’t done anything this year other than be a decent-named win for good teams. However, Mississippi State has been even more boring. This game might die from dullness … which means, of course, it’s probably going to be a 75-73 shootout now. Nah. Giving away 11 to an A&M team that struggles to score in chunks seems like a lot, but it’s right on the number. Tread lightly.

To be warned, every time this year I think Joe Burrow is about to turn back into Joe Burrow, he comes out and does something else amazing. With that said, he can be the updated version of Joe Burrow, and Auburn could still win this outright, much less cover the 10.5. Hopefully you got on on the AU Tigers and their tremendous defense when they were catching 12.5.

You’re not wrong with thinking South Carolina is going to beat Tennessee with ease. This is an okay Gamecock team with a brutal schedule, and this is a dumpster fire of a Tennessee team that can’t seem to get through a game without doing something silly. We all keep waiting for the Vols to have that ONE game – even with the Mississippi State win – that looks right. I’m doing the think I hate more than anything in the world – other than cilantro, or course – and going with the win-don’t-cover with a line under 7, but this should be close.

Gut feeling time – and feeling gut time after sitting in front of a computer for two straight months and registering a total of 19 steps during that time – Alabama pitches a gem, and not just because it’s Arkansas. With Tua out, everything else is about to sharpen up. The defense is about to work like it’s supposed to, the running game will take over, and Mac Jones will be more than fine. But be warned, as the line goes, my gut has (bleep) for brains.

If ever a team seemed like it’s grinding through a season, it’s Kentucky. It’s trying really, really hard, and it’s just not getting enough production. Missouri has been a bit flaky, it hasn’t always been focused – who the hell loses to Vanderbilt? – and that ten it’s giving away on the road seems like way too much. Kentucky just doesn’t have an O, though.
