We have some real games that really matter this week. There aren’t a ton of them, but it’s a quality of quantity week. It’s time to eat.
This is all for spits, giggles, and entertainment purposes only, however, just in case you dabble …
It took a minor miracle to get there, but San Jose State did you right last week getting the 19.5 against Air Force. Now the Spartans are at home against a New Mexico team with as dangerous a ground game as the Falcons did, but with NO defense whatsoever. The point total has rocketed up to 67 – it was too high at 63 – and the world seems to like San Jose State a bit too much. It’s a coin-flip game, and the Lobos are getting 6.5.

The UCF-Cincinnati battle for the East feels a bit like a possible shootout. Give UCF’s defense some credit for being terrific – and be afraid of last year’s 38-13 Knight win that came in low – but this should be played past the 60s. Cincinnati is good, but it’s still UCF and it’s only giving up 3.5. Don’t let the Pitt loss distract you from your mission.

Will Boston College finally show up and play like it’s supposed to? The world doesn’t think it will, jumping all over Louisville to make it as high as a 6-point favorite after starting as at a -3. There are just enough Cardinal quarterback concerns – Jawon Pass should be okay, though – to like the Eagles outright. If you can get lots of points, cool.

Miami is doing a whole lot of things right, but it’s not quite winning like it should. Virginia Tech is doing a whole lot of thins ground, and it’s 2-2 like the Canes are. The Hokies might be a hot mess, and Miami will win, but 14 points are way too many to be giving away for a Manny Diaz team that has yet to beat an FBS team besides Central Michigan. That 17-12 win do it for you?

I’m not quite sure if the betting public just thinks North Carolina is sad. This is easily a two-touchdown favorite over a miserable Georgia Tech team that has no identity whatsoever and has get to score more than 14 points against an FBS team. UNC is only giving away 10.5 – get in before it goes up to 12ish.

Is Duke for real? QB Quentin Harris is playing better than Daniel Jones was through his first four games of last season, and Pitt is just … weird. It’s able to hang with UCF and Penn State, and then it struggles against Delaware and Ohio. On the road, assume weird at more than the 4.5 Duke is giving up. The Blue Devils have hung 41 points or more on the board in each of their last three games.

It’s tiring to think that each week will be the one when Oklahoma will struggle. The real concern at Kansas isn’t just that the offense will roll, it’s the defense that’s been great on third downs and keeps on impressing. Giving away 32 on the road seems like WAY too many, even at Kansas. Go ahead. The Jayhawks could play reasonably well for a while at least 48-14.

It’s Oklahoma State vs. Texas Tech. Shouldn’t the point total be somewhere around 243.5? The problem is Texas Tech – it doesn’t score. Oklahoma State – even with the loss to Texas – is playing like a team that’s going to be deep into the Big 12 title hunt for the next two months. The line went from OSU -7 to 10. See if you can get it cheaper, and wait for the total to go up a bit more. It’s at 63.5, and it should go to 65 – then go under.

Here’s the problem. TCU is far better than Iowa State. Even with the strange loss to SMU two weeks ago, this really is a team that’s going to be dangerous throughout. However, Iowa State is flaky-good and it’s at home. TCU is getting points – take them. This is a battle-tested team that’s not going to fall for the Cyclone Jedi mind tricks played upon the weak-minded. The 43.5 total came WAY down from 48 – the market overcorrected.

This is a far, far, far cry from the Texas-West Virginia world last year. The concern is that Texas just stinks defensively – the defensive backs haven’t shown up. The other problem is a Mountaineer offense that’s the worst in the Big 12. You don’t have to like it, but the 10.5 Texas is giving away just isn’t that many.

Go ahead and make your case either way on Baylor-Kansas State, and you’re probably right. The Bears might be 4-0, but it’s a shaky 4-0 considering the problems getting by Rice and in the fight with Iowa State. The total came rocketing down fast from 54 to 49 – you should still be fine with the under. The 1.5 K-State is giving up doesn’t matter. If you like Baylor, go with it outright

Oh for the love of … you have to think about this? Kent State? Wisconsin giving up 35 is nice and breezy, especially coming down from the 36.5. The 59 total is a little worrisome, though, considering the Badgers are going to yank their starters fast with Michigan State coming up. However, this might be 35-0 at halftime.

Purdue is just a mess. Jack Plummer might turn out to be outstanding one day, but the Boilermakers are missing their quarterback – Elijah Sindelar is out with a broken clavicle and star WR Rondale Moore is out. Even so, the 28.5 Penn State is giving is too rich. This could be a total wipeout and still be 40ish-15ish.

Hated Michigan at -7, love it at -3.5. There are plenty of reasons to go with Iowa. It’s a rock-solid team, it has the quarterback in Nate Stanley, and the team is playing well overall. Now that the line has fallen, though, don’t mess around. It’s still Michigan, dammit. It had better be good enough to win this by more than 3.5, or this will be one ugly rest of the season.

Yuck. Maryland vs. Rutgers? What’s your other option, going to see Judy? The Terps have shown NOTHING since that wipeout win over Syracuse, but this doesn’t seem like it’s a case of Team Plays Better Because It Loses Coach thing with Rutgers. The smart, responsible thing would be to play this as if Chris Ash was still the Scarlet Knight head coach, in which case Maryland -12.5 would be an easy call. But be really, really careful. This might just be a Scarlet Knight team that focuses a little differently after a tumultuous week.

This Minnesota – Illinois thing might be a screaming STAY AWAY. The Gophers haven’t done anything easy so far. If it can’t beat Georgia Southern or South Dakota State by 14, why will it get by a rested Illinois team with two weeks off? Forget the whole motivation thing after the Gophers got rolled in last year’s game, but until they prove they can beat someone with ease, assume they can’t.

If you can’t say something nice … say something that isn’t quite as mean. Northwestern is … plucky. It can’t score, but it … has a nice personality. As long as Nebraska isn’t all mopey after soiling itself in the home loss to Ohio State, it shouldn’t have a problem winning this by more than a touchdown.

There’s absolutely no logical reason to think Ohio State is going to slow down. It’s been brilliant, it’s been almost flawless, and it’s been able to breeze on by without having to break a sweat. It’s Michigan State with one of the nation’s top defenses – Mark Dantonio will have something in the bag. The public has been hammering Ohio State – good. Wait a bit and hope it gets up to Buckeyes -22ish or so, but you’re fine with MSU +20.

Khalil Tate, no Khalil Tate, you’re good either way. I’ll admit that I’m sort of on a kick of liking the rested teams this week, especially at home. Colorado is a nice play no matter what at -4, but if you sort of like the Wildcats, do it now. If Tate ends up playing, this thing might swing to a pick ’em.

Yeah, be afraid of Cal starting Devon Modster on the road against an Oregon defense that’s not giving up a thing. However, with the line going up to Ducks -18, count on the Cal defense to keep this from getting out of hand. Oregon dominated Stanford a few weeks ago and only won 21-6 – Cal is better than the Cardinal.

I want NOTHING to do with picking this Oregon State – UCLA thing. I have less than zero faith that the Bruins can do anything right offensively – especially with Dorian Thompson-Robinson hurt – but Oregon State hasn’t beaten anyone. If I have to, and if there’s this much consternation over with way the flaky will fall, go with the team getting the six points. Forget the Washington State win for a second – UCLA hasn’t scored on anyone else. Until it does, that 65.5 point total seems ridiculous.

Other than it being Washington vs. Stanford, and other than this supposedly being a game between two good teams, what is there to make you think for a second that this will be interesting? Stanford has never recovered from the brutally physical win over Northwestern, and the Huskies are playing like they’re ready to sneak right back into the Pac-12 championship/CFP outside shot conversation. Even so, the 16.5 UW is giving away might be a wee bit rich – even if it’s an easy win.

Just be warned … be really, really, really careful of Utah State. It’s not going to beat LSU, but Jordan Love and that offense could be annoying against a shockingly suspect Tiger D. The money has been on the LSU side, and it might keep coming. Wait for the the 27.5 to go up a wee bit by game time. Think of it this way – LSU hung 66 on Vanderbilt two weeks ago, and won by 28.

Auburn has already proven itself away from home. The win over Oregon is only going to look better and better as the season goes on, and winning at Texas A&M was nice. However, dealing with a Florida team that gets a slew of key parts back from injury is different. The 2.5 shouldn’t matter, but the Gators getting points at home just feels sort of right – even if Auburn is the absolute real deal. This should be relatively low scoring, but the total isn’t budging off of that 48.5.
– CFN Game Preview, Prediction

Who else thinks Missouri might just be the most dangerous under-the-radar team going right now? Troy is Troy – it’s good enough to at least be competitive – and the 24.5 seems like a whole lot to give away. However, the Tigers appear to have figured it out defensively, allowing just 21 point over the last three games, and that includes games against West Virginia and South Carolina.
– CFN Game Preview, Prediction

Obviously the entire point of the spread was to be the equalizer. In the case of Georgia at Tennessee, the spread is just a nuisance. Until the Vols show any sign of anything after that 34-3 clunker against Florida … the line started out at Georgia -22? Okay, cool. It’s up to 25 in some places? Okay, cool. Whatever.

The public liked Ole Miss just enough to boost the line from 6.5 to 7. Have the Rebels showed enough consistency to think they’re about to win anything without a fight? Vanderbilt struggled against Northern Illinois, but the skill parts are better, and the Ole Miss quarterback situation is a bit murky. The Commodores can win this outright.
