It got lost in the shocking win over Kansas State that Louisiana’s offense didn’t really work. The running game was slowed down, and Levi Lewis and the passing game weren’t great. The D was terrific and the special teams came through, but don’t be shocked if a Georgia State makes this more of a fight at home. The public thinks so – the line went down from ULL -17 to now 15.5. It’s probably going to drop another half a point.

If you can get Cincinnati vs. Austin Peay somewhere, don’t think too hard about this. The Bearcats should wear down the Governors without any problem, but it might go deep into the second half before you get comfortable.

Irresponsible advice time … like Syracuse, but only because of spite. It should’ve and could’ve and would’ve covered against North Carolina last week, but the timing was off – the team wasn’t close to sharp. The Orange owe us, and the 21.5 they’re getting against Pitt should make up for last week’s clunker.

I don’t want to say stay away from Oklahoma State and Tulsa, but in this craziest of all years when we really don’t know what kind of shape these teams are in, be careful. The Cowboys will win easily, but the -23 hasn’t moved a lick. Tulsa is loaded with veterans to keep up the pace, but OSU could hang 50 if it gets going fast.

What have we learned over the first few weeks of this weird season? If you put a smallish amount – and the same amount every time, NO exceptions – on a slew of different crazy money lines, you’re going to come out strong. Boston College at +185 at Duke isn’t that great, but this might be a stronger Eagle team than it’s being given credit for.

Speaking of the unknowns and money lines …
Watch out for Liberty at WKU. I love the Hilltoppers this year – they can make a run at the Conference USA title if they get a little offense – and they weren’t awful against Louisville. Liberty, though is … weird. It has an SEC head coach in Hugh Freeze, a whole lot of interesting parts, and a massive attitude as an independent. Love the +14, sort of like the Flames at +425 on the money line.

Unless you have a strong conviction here, don’t mess around with Navy at Tulane. We have NO clue what kind of Navy team will show up after the BYU debacle, but it seems like the market thinks that Labor Day night was an aberration. I’m sort of with the idea that Navy will bounce back, but be careful here.

It’s never a good idea to invest in something you hope happens. The 61.5 point total on Houston at Baylor is about right, and as we’ve seen so far, offenses are having a hard time getting going. But this is one of those games we all hope and want to be a shootout, so heart goes over, head goes under, and in the absence of being able to see either of these teams – especially a Baylor squad with a new staff and a whole lot of new parts – like the Power Five program with a line that’s going down.

Forget the investment side for a moment, Appalachian State at Marshall might be the most interesting game of the weekend. App State wasn’t as sharp as it should’ve been against Charlotte, and it still won easily. I like the Mountaineers to make a statement here in what’s going to be its big national game, but again with the Monet line, Marshall at home at +170 is inviting.

The money will roll in big on Notre Dame by gametime vs. USF. The -25.5 has been relatively steady, and that shouldn’t be a problem after the tune-up week against Duke. Expect a more explosive Irish team.

Make a call on UCF at Georgia Tech. UCF might be playing its opener, and Georgia Tech’s defense looked strong in the win over FSU, and UCF had a slew of players opt-out, and the Georgia Tech offense looks like it could break through. Like the Knights a 7.5 – that line hasn’t budged – Georgia Tech +230 on the money line isn’t bad is you thing it’ll at least cover that TD-plus.

With the line at -2.5, it’s all about who you like when Miami is at Louisville. I’m buying in on the Hurricanes – D’Eriq King, the improved running game and offense, a defense that didn’t quite turn it loose against UAB – but there isn’t any one factor here to argue either way. with the line.

Again with the issue of the smallish line with no real thing to go off of. Troy went from -3.5 on the road at Middle Tennessee to -3, but 1) Troy hasn’t played yet and 2) Middle Tennessee played once and was totally miserable against Army. Until the Blue Raiders prove otherwise …

There’s always a problem this time of year of the overinflated line because of a big, splashy win over a bad team. SMU should blow away a North Texas team that rolled up Houston Baptist, but that same Houston Baptist gave Texas Tech a hard time … like the Mustangs, love the over on the 68.5.

Hate is such a strong, ugly word. I hate this Texas State-ULM game. The Bobcats have been a whole lot of fun in two losses, and ULM barely got off the bus against Army. The over on the 61.5 might be obliterated, but as was the case with the UTSA game last week, it’s not in my DNA to recommend Texas State as a favorite, ever. If you can get ULM at a +190 on the money line, go for it. Continuing with the negative chi and all this hate …

Do you like the new energy and the new push from a coaching change? Southern Miss was miserable – and sucking wind way too early – in the loss to South Alabama, and now it deals with a Louisiana Tech team that hasn’t played yet. It’s a stay away at USM -5.5, but if you kinda sorta like Louisiana Tech, that +180 on the money line is a strong chance to take.

Enough with this wishy-washy stuff. Yeah there’s a lot of uncertainty. Yeah there’s a ton of unknowns to deal with. Yeah, it’s time to make a definitive call and run with it. NC State went down from -2.5 to -1 against Wake Forest, and while that extra point-plus doesn’t really make a difference, it shows where the love is. NC State should be the better team, and for what it’s worth now, it’s at home. Wolfpack, definitely.
