Collections of brown wheelie bins for garden and food waste to resume in Bury

Collections of brown wheelie bins for garden and food waste are set to resume in Bury.

They were stopped as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, in line with many other councils.

Now town hall bosses have announced staffing levels mean collections would start up again.

Collection times, however, may differ 'on a day-to-day' basis, the council said.

Households are being urged to sign up to the council's email alert system to be told when to put bins out.

Councillor Alan Quinn, the council's cabinet member for the environment, praised frontline crews.

He said: "During the last few weeks of this Covid-19 outbreak, our bin crews have still been out there, working tirelessly to make sure collections still go ahead.

"They have gone above and beyond the call of duty and I would like to thank them personally and also the reaction of the Bury public has been brilliant.

"What we can now announce is that the brown bin collection which was suspended is now being reintroduced.

"This is because of staff numbers, redeployment and re-training.

"Collections times may differ on a day-to-day basis so please sign up to the council's email reminder system.

"If you do this, the night before you get an email telling you what bin colour is going out the next day.

"Stay safe and stay at home."

For blue, green and grey bins, currently collections are continuing as normal.

Residents are asked to put out their bins at 7am on their usual collection day.

Household waste recycling centres across Greater Manchester are currently closed until further notice and cannot be used for the disposal of extra household waste.

The council says this is to help protect members of the public during the coronavirus outbreak.

Residents are asked to store extra waste safely at home until the centres reopen again.
