Colleagues save binman from drowning after he falls into lake

Hero colleagues saved a workmate from drowning after he fell into a lake near a rubbish dump.

Dave Rogers, 40, suffered a seizure as he walked home from the Lamby Way centre in Cardiff and stumbled into Lamby Lake in Rumney.

Mr Rogers lost consciousness and would have almost certainly drowned but was spotted by work colleague Lewis Royle.

Mr Royle waded into the water but was unable to pull Mr Rogers out so kept him afloat and raised the alarm for fellow workers at the Cardiff council site to rush to the scene.

A Cardiff council spokesman said: “Dave wasn’t moving and Lewis feared the worst but instinctively he jumped in and tried to rescue him.

“It is understood that Dave was in the water for at least 10 minutes before Lewis spotted him but he was unable to pull himself out.

“After jumping into the water to save him Lewis was unable to get Dave fully onto the boardwalk but managed to keep his head above water so he was still able to breathe.

“Reaching for his phone which he had dropped onto the floor before jumping in to try to save his colleague, Lewis managed to phone the office to get urgent assistance.

“Their supervisor, Dave Sultana, responded immediately and drove straight to the park to assist. Both of them managed to drag Dave onto the boardwalk.”

Mr Rogers was taken to hospital and is now recovering at home.

Councillor Michael Michael, cabinet member for clean streets, environment, and recycling at the council, said: “I would like to wish Dave Rogers a speedy recovery from this incident which could have been so much worse.

“He was very lucky that his colleague spotted him in the water and did everything he could to bring him to safety.

“With Lewis Royle, Dave Sultana and John Minihane giving immediate assistance I am pleased to say that this story has had a happy ending.”
