Colleagues found dad-of-three slumped over in Tata steelworks in Port Talbot, inquest hears

A loving father was discovered slumped in a 'hot running channel' at Tata's Port Talbot steelworks, an inquest has been told.

His colleagues immediately called for help, but father-of-three Justin Day was pronounced dead at the scene of the September 25 incident.

Coroner’s officer Mark Adams told the opening of the inquest at Swansea Civic Centre that the contractor had been working that day on the inside upper level of Bay 21.

Acting senior coroner of Swansea and Neath Port Talbot , Colin Phillips, said a post mortem carried out on the 44-year-old from Llansamlet , concluded that the provisional cause of death was pending further investigation.

This is the scene at the steelworks following the death of Mr Day:

He adjourned the inquest for six months, until April 8, when he would conduct a review of the progress of the investigation.

The circumstances surrounding the death of Mr Day are being investigated by South Wales Police with support from the Health and Safety Executive.

A fundraising page for Mr Day, described by his family as a 'doting dad' , has raised almost £8,000 to support his family.
