Collapsed manhole which caused traffic chaos in Durham city centre repaired and road reopened

A manhole which collapsed closing a city centre road for more than 12 hours has been repaired in time for the Durham Lumiere event tonight.

The manhole cracked open on the A690 after the Leazes Bowl roundabout on Wednesday afternoon.

Durham County Council imposed a lane closure leading to huge delays for traffic with Go North East saying buses were experiencing delays of an hour.

The closure was in place overnight until around 10am on Thursday but it has now been opened after work on the road was completed.

The road has reopened in time for visitors flocking to the city for the first night of the popular Durham Lumiere .

The four-night light festival returns tonight with around 200,000 visitors expected to head to the city centre.
