With collusion case settled, Colin Kaepernick’s lawyer thinks Patriots could sign him

Colin Kaepernick isn’t planning on resting on his laurels after receiving a settlement from a collusion lawsuit he filed against the NFL in October 2017. The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback still wants to play in the NFL, according to his attorney Mark Geragos.

“I think you’re going to see … within the next two weeks that somebody is going to step up and do the right thing, and you want me to predict who?” Geragos told CNN in an interview on Saturday. “Besides the Panthers, it would not surprise me if [Patriots owner] Bob Kraft makes a move.”

The lawyer pegged the Panthers as a great fit for Kaepernick because quarterback Cam Newton is dealing with a knee injury, which could create an opening at the position. Last season, the Panthers signed safety Eric Reid, Kaepernick’s former teammate who also settled his own collusion case against the NFL this week.

The Patriots, however, are a trickier match. They have backup quarterback Brian Hoyer and practice squad quarterback Danny Etling. Hoyer may not have a huge track record of success as a starter, but he carries clout within the locker room and among the coaches, largely because of his hard work as a scout-team quarterback. His thorough studying of the opposing quarterbacks has been helpful in preparing the team’s defense.

Kaepernick would also bring a media circus, which the Patriots have made a habit of silencing. The question is whether Bill Belichick would want to invite this particular media circus to town.
