Colin Farrell surprises fans as he crashes Brendan Gleeson's Saturday Night Live monologue

Top Irish actor Brendan Gleeson made his hosting debut on popular US comedy programme Saturday Night Live over the weekend.

And to the delight of his fans, Gleeson's performance was crashed by his co-star Colin Farrell who made a surprise appearance during his opening monologue.

The Irish actors appeared together to promote their new film, The Banshees of Inisherin, which is out in cinemas this month.

The Harry Potter actor introduced himself, saying: "Hi, I'm Brendan Gleeson. If you don't recognise the accent, I'm Irish. And if you don't recognise the face, I'm that fella that you've seen in that thing you can't remember but you think you kind of liked."

The Dubliner, 67, played tunes on a mandolin and told jokes before mentioning fellow actor Colin Farrell - joking that he was "too needy".

"Do you know who else is weird and wonderful?" Gleeson asked the audience. "Colin Farrell. We worked together on In Bruges, and we just got back together for a new film, The Banshees of Inisherin.

"And funny enough, it's about two fellas who fall out because one of them is a little too needy.

"And I mean, I love Colin to bits, but the story's not too far from the truth," he joked.

On cue, Colin Farrell walked onto the set wearing a fake moustache as the audience cheered.

Farrell then quizzed Gleeson about who his favourite co-star was, with Gleeson answering flatly: "Paddington Bear."

They finished off the set by singing a duet together before hugging it out.

People watching at home were delighted by the surprise appearance, with one person writing: "Wasn't expecting Colin! Bravo! great actors."

Another said: "One of our best! Finally an Irishman on SNL where I’m not cringing! Hats off Brendan."

Gleeson's appearance as host comes ahead of the release of his upcoming film The Banshees of Inisherin, which sees him reunited with Colin Farrell and is out in cinemas on October 21.

The black comedy-drama is written and directed by Martin McDonagh, who directed the pair in both In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths.
