Colin Farrell honoured at US film festival ahead of Oscars

Film star Colin Farrell has been honoured at a US film festival for his leading role in the Banshees of Inisherin ahead of the Oscars which he has been tipped to win at.

The Castleknock native won the Desert Palm Achievement Award at the 34th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival in California. Fellow Oscar contenders Cate Blanchett and Brendan Fraser were also honoured at the event.

Martin McDonagh's Banshees of Inisherin, which features Brendan Gleeson, has been tipped to pick up a lot of awards. The zany period piece set on an island off the west coast of Ireland has already been nominated for an impressive eight Golden Globes awards.

Speaking to Variety, Farrell praised his co-star Brendan Gleeson and said their next project together could not come "soon enough". The actor said: "He's a joy to work with, he comes to it from all the right places, as a man and as an artist," he told the entertainment industry outlet.

"I love him dearly," he added. The pair worked together worded with Martin McDonagh on other projects including the much-loved In Bruge.

Collin has previously spoken openly over the years about his battles with alcohol and drug addiction, but nowadays he said he feels “mad lucky”. The leading man has lived in Los Angeles for almost 17 years, and while he has made his life there, he admits Ireland will always be “home”.
