Supermarket giant Coles has been forced to step in after staff at one of its stores were told they must donate money as part of a "compulsory mufti day".
Coles at Broadway in Sydney's inner west outlined its plans for the July 27 mufti-day on a yellow flyer, which was later posted to social media site Reddit.
"To raise $$ for RED KITE we will have a compulsory MUFTI day," the flyer said.
The flyer went on to say that those who wore casual "mufti" clothes "must donate $2".
"For those who doesn't (sic) will have to donate $5."
When the ABC visited the store, many staff were unaware of the planned mufti day.
One staff member who did not wish to be named said he did not have a problem donating money to the charity as it was "a good cause".
"If they asked me to donate $2, no problem, but I think it's the attitude that's wrong," he said.
"When they start telling you that you have to donate at least $2, I think that's really unfair."
Another employee said $5 was a small amount to pay.
When asked if he thought it was fair that management was making staff pay, he replied: "Even if I don't dress up, I'm happy to pay that".
A spokesperson for Coles said the mufti day would still go ahead, however donations would not be compulsory.
"A picture raised more than $28 million through fundraising activities such as dress-up days," she said.
"Our fundraising activities are voluntary for team members to participate in and this sign is not in accordance with our usual practices and has been removed at the store."
Redkite supports children and young people with cancer.
The charity's website says it has been partnering with Coles since 2013.
