Coleraine striker Stewart Nixon: I had to postpone romantic break to attend final

Stewart Nixon has revealed how he had to postpone a romantic break with his girlfriend so he can attend Saturday's BetMcLean League Cup final.

The Coleraine striker is cup-tied for the decider, but will travel with his new teammates to Windsor Park to experience the big occasion up close.

Nixon had originally arranged a Valentine's Day break with his girlfriend Lyndsey on the same night as the final.

The booking had been made when he was with former club Carrick Rangers.

"We booked the trip when I was with Carrick, and Carrick obviously play on Friday night," Stewart told this week's That's What I Call Football podcast.

"So everything was going grand, and then I signed or Coleraine and we looked at the fixtures.

"Lyndsey then said, 'Stewart, you know the cup final is on February 15?'. And I was thinking, 'I have something on that night...'. Then I realised that was the night we were supposed to be going away.

"I spoke to Oran and explained I was away, but he said it would be good if I was part of the cup final.

"So I told Lyndsey that we needed to get the trip changed but she was having none of it at all. So I let her be, and I said to Oran if it was okay if I went down (to Dundalk) and he said it was up to me.

"So I went back to Lyndsey and said, 'this is getting changed'. She was alright about it. We got it changed to Sunday night.

"A few roses and a box of chocolates should cheer her up.

"If I didn't get it changed I would have been watching the final on TV down in Dundalk."

Nixon - a January arrival from Carrick Rangers - admits it will be a good experience watching how his new club handles cup final day.

"We are treating it like another game, the lads just want to go out to do themselves justice and hopefully we get the win," he added.

"But it will be interesting to see how they go about things. I will keep an eye on how the players prepare and things like that."
