Coleraine striker James McLaughlin 'distraught' by Bobby Burns injury

Oran Kearney says James McLaughlin was left "distraught" after watching Bobby Burns being stretchered off at the Showgrounds.

McLaughlin received a red card for the challenge that resulted in Burns being carried off the pitch.

Burns, 21, is currently on loan at Glentoran from English League Two side Barrow, but now there are fears that he could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

"James was upset by it, and I believe it is a bad one for Bobby," Kearney told BBC Radio Ulster.

"I can't really comment on the tackle itself until I see it on TV. Because of the angle I am at in the dugout, all I could see was James running towards the ball and I had no idea who was involved in the tackle until afterwards.

"So I can only go on what the decision is at the time.

"The sad thing is from Bobby's point of view, and he has a road of recovery ahead of him and we wish him well."

Kearney added: "I spoke to James in the changing room and he is distraught.

Referee Jamie Robinson shows a red card to Coleraine’s James McLaughlin (Inpho)

"He is a hard player and gives as good as he gets, but he has ever tried to hurt anyone during my time at Coleraine and I will stand over him from that point of view.

"So he is disappointed in there and will take some consoling."

Coleraine won the game 2-1, with first-half goals from Stephen O'Donnell and Ben Doherty.

Glentoran threatened a grandstand finish late on when substitute Jay Donnelly pulled one back.

And despite a nervy finish the Bannsiders earned the win.

"I think the way the game ended, the last 10 or 15 minutes, the game probably turned into something we didn't want to," Kearney added.

"But overall I thought our performance was really good and we are delighted with the three points.

"We don't know any other way but to push on and keep the back door shut, with the view that if we were patient we would get other opportunities as well.

"We are not one for changing tactics or trying to twist things round because I think it confuses things for players.

"We only know the one way and we try and stick to that."
