Coleraine boss Oran Kearney hopes teenager's history-making debut inspires other young players

Oran Kearney hopes Jay Riley's history-making debut for Coleraine on Tuesday night inspires other young players at the club.

The 14-year-old became the youngest-ever player to represent the Bannsiders when he played in the North West Cup.

A much-changed Coleraine side fell to a 2-1 defeat to Moyola Park in the quarter-finals but it was a night to remember for teenage defender Riley, who was born on December 22, 2004.

"Jay was involved in our Academy and then went to Linfield for a couple of years. He is now back with us," Kearney said.

"I know his father Ronnie well because we were in the same year at school.

"It is great to see players like Jay coming through. We are happy to give our young players a chance.

"Jay isn't the biggest, but he is physically fit and in good shape. He is strong.

"A lot of these youngsters play in the Under 20s so they are used to coming up against players bigger than themselves. I believe playing against 'men' really brings these youngsters on in their development."

Riley played at right-back in Tuesday's North West Cup game against Moyola but can also play in midfield.

"He gets up and down the pitch," Kearney said.

"He hit the bar with a shot which was unlucky, but it was great experience for him.

"It also shows him the first-team set-up and the changing rooms, things like that. There were some first-team players involved, too, so that helps."

Kearney hopes Riley's introduction will inspire other young players at the club.

"Hopefully it shows them that we will give them a chance. It should give them the belief that one day they will play for Coleraine's first-team," the Coleraine boss added.

"We have tried to streamline the first team, and that then gives us the opportunity to introduce a few of the younger lads when we need them. And when they are ready."
