Coleraine assistant manager William Murphy hits out at standard of refereeing following playoff defeat

Coleraine assistant manager William Murphy has hit out at the standard of refereeing after his side were denied by a controversial penalty in Tuesday night's Europa League playoff .

Trailing 3-2 in the sixth minute of injury time, Cliftonville were awarded a spot-kick after Ryan Curran tumbled inside the box under a challenge from Josh Carson.

Coleraine manager Rodney McAree described the penalty award as a "poor decision", a view hammered home by assistant Murphy.

"It will take a while to sum that one up" - Cliftonville boss McLaughlin praises players after stunning comeback win

The defeat means the Bannsiders miss out on a potential £200,000 windfall, while Cliftonville will now meet Glentoran in a winner-takes-all clash this Saturday.

Speaking on Twitter, Murphy said: "Can someone tell me how this is a penalty the referee said Josh had wrapped his legs round the opponent. Absolute joke of a refereeing decision yet again. As mentioned before @OfficialIrishFA need to do something game is ruined by inept officials."

The comment was backed by Glentoran striker Darren Murray who tweeted: "Watched it back there mate - madness."

Murphy replied: "Laughing stock yet again referees are absolutely the worse (sic) I have ever seen in any league. Iv (sic) said it before accountable to no one poor poor standard we have here."

Coleraine led 3-1 with just 14 minutes remaining thanks to James McLaughlin's hat-trick.

Conor McMenamin then made it 3-2 before Ryan Curran's late penalty.

Goals from Levi Ives and McMenamin in extra-time completed the 5-3 victory.
