Coleen Rooney's pal slams Rebekah Vardy amid Prince Andrew interview comparisons

Coleen Rooney’s friend Lizzie Cundy has slammed Rebekah Vardy after giving her first interview since losing the Wagatha Christie libel case.

The judge ruled in Coleen’s favour on the £3million libel case brought to her after she accused Rebekah of leaking stories to the press from her private Instagram account.

Rebekah, who is married to Leicester City footballer Jamie Vardy, became emotional as she opened up about feeling “let down by the legal system” in an interview with TalkTV.

Appearing on Lorraine on Thursday morning, the 54-year-old former WAG did not hold back as she labelled the interview a “mistake”.

Lizzie, who has been friends with Coleen since they met at the 2006 World Cup, compared it to Prince Andrew’s disaster Panorama interview with Emily Maitlis in 2019.

Lorraine host Ranvir Singh asked if the interview was a wrong move, Lizzie said it was “without doubt”, adding: “This is like the Prince Andrew interview. Different charges, obviously, but no one is believing.”

She continued: “If I were Rebekah, I would have gone away, reflected, maybe apologised. There’s one thing I did notice – there was no apology.

“The judge has given a verdict. It’s not like being in a player’s bar lounge where there’s gossip. For court, you need your facts, you need your evidence and sadly for Rebekah there wasn’t any.”

Lizzie also revealed that she desperately tried to stop the Wagatha Christie trial from going to court in a bid to help out her friend Coleen Rooney.

She said: “It didn’t have to happen. I don’t think it should have ever got to court and she’s the one that forced it. She wanted her day here and it’s caused so much stress, so much upset.

“I said countless times to Coleen, I would negotiate. I said sort it out over a prosecco and a bowl of nuts. Don’t go to court. It’s so stressful.

“If she hadn’t taken it to court, we wouldn’t be talking about it today.”

Ranvir then asked: “Having spoken to Coleen on Friday after the verdict, do you think Coleen would ever want to sit down with Rebekah and talk this out?”

Lizzie said she couldn’t envisage the pair patching things up in the near future, adding of Coleen: “She's had a tough time and I think just wants to move on from it.”

As the conversation turned to Rebekah, Lizzie did note she believes the I’m a Celebrity star can “move on” from this setback.

She said: “As a PR person, I would say to Rebekah: reinvent yourself, do something for waterproof phones or waterproof mascara – she cried a lot in court. Don’t go back to this, this is over. Try and move on.”

Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV
