Coleen Nolan called a 'disgrace' for falling pregnant out of wedlock

Coleen Nolan said she was called a disgrace for having her son Shane out of wedlock.

The Loose Women panel discussed the latest figures showing most pregnancies now occur outside of married life. On today's show Denise Welch and Janet Street-Porter agreed they weren't surprised by the news nor do they think it particularly matters in this day and age.

Coleen explained how she felt it still mattered to those from religious backgrounds but admitted it is "more of an old school thing." The panel regular went on to say how she was previously shamed for having her son, Shane Richie Jnr, before getting married.

She said: "My mum and dad were fine about it but she said 'If you're happy I'm happy.' Then this newspaper article came out, a double-page spread with Jim Bowen.

"He was very big at the time because Bullseye [the show he presented] was massive and he came out saying that I was a bit of a disgrace and I was a terrible example for girls my age."

Coleen was previously a part of the girl group The Nolan Sisters who she admits had a "sickeningly sweet" image to uphold. She added it was the media who portrayed them this way and not the reality of how the band behaved.

Continuing with her story, she said: "I don't know why Jim was so interested because he certainly wasn't the father. I think what he was trying to say was this girl group who were sweet and innocent, now I've let them down."

Coleen had her son two years before marrying his father, Shane Richie, in 1990. The couple eventually separated in 1997 and divorced in 1999.
