Cole Palmer told next challenge that awaits at Man City after Swindon display

Cole Palmer has already had his next Manchester City target outlined after putting in an eye-catching performance against Swindon in the FA Cup.

The 19-year-old underlined his burgeoning reputation with a goal - and an assist - as Premier League champions City made light work of their League Two opponents.

Despite being hit with a Covid-19 outbreak, there were countless household names in the starting XI as Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo, Kevin de Bruyne and Bernardo Silva all featured.

However, it was the fleet-footed City graduate Palmer who shone brightest on FA Cup duty.

After laying on an assist for the opener scored by Silva, the 19-year-old proceeded to round off the scoring during a 4-1 verdict with a stylish, left-footed finish.

Palmer had been tipped for the top pre-match by former England international turned ITV pundit Ashley Cole.

Now, the same man - who has worked with the City sensation at age-group level for the national team - has set out what the teenager needs to do next.

Speaking during punditry duties for ITV, the former England player said: "They just get it. Playing with world class players and training with them day-in, day-out... he's going to see what makes them great.

"The other thing that I think Pep has done well is manage the expectations, not just of the boy but everyone else. Everyone expects him to be playing week-in, week-out. Is he good enough to do it? Yes, at another club. But here at Manchester City, take your time and be patient with him."

Cole added: "He is [talented]. He has got to keep that competitive edge, consistency and do that not just on the odd occasion. First and foremost, he's got to get himself in the team week-in, week-out.

"That's going to be very, very difficult and, realistically, it's not going to happen for him yet. When you get these chances, you have got to take them. He's taken that chance with a great performance. He's now got to continue wanting to develop and learn from all these great players that he's around."
