Cole Palmer: Chelsea handed fitness boost as star in training ahead of Napoli clash

Cole Palmer trained at Cobham on Tuesday morning in a major boost to his chances of returning to the Chelsea team for Wednesday’s crucial Champions League clash in Naples.

Chelsea sit in the top eight of the table but need a good win against Napoli and for results to go their way in order to nail down their position and avoid a two-legged play-off round. The top eight sides in the competition bypass that round and progress straight to the round of 16.

Chelsea are hoping to have Palmer available despite the Englishman missing both last week’s 1-0 win over Pafos and Sunday’s 3-1 victory at Crystal Palace.

It has been an injury-plagued season for Palmer, due to a recurring groin injury, but he has missed the last two matches due to an unrelated thigh strain.

Palmer trained both of the two days leading up to Sunday’s win at Selhurst Park but the game was said to have come a day too early for him. He then trained on Monday and was in training on Tuesday too, in a boost to his chances of featuring against Napoli.

Chelsea fly to Naples on Tuesday evening, with head coach Liam Rosenior to hold a press conference alongside a Chelsea player shortly after the squad land in Italy.

Palmer has completed just four full 90 minutes all season and has not been fit to play for England since June.
