CINCINNATI _ Cubs left-hander Cole Hamels left Friday night's game against the Reds after throwing one warm-up pitch before the second inning.
Hamels, who threw 22 pitches in the first inning, shook his left shoulder slightly before walking off the mound. The 35-year-old was one out shy of reaching the 100-inning mark for the season.
Hamels showed no obvious signs of discomfort during the first inning. He remains under evaluation after he felt something along his left side.
The Reds collected two hits and a walk before taking a 1-0 lead on a fielder's choice in which second baseman Addison Russell held the ball instead of throwing to first after a hard slide by Yasiel Puig near the bag.
Left-hander Mike Montgomery took over for Hamels and allowed a home run to Phillip Ervin on his first pitch.
