Coldstream lab and research space growing by 40,000 square feet

A dedication ceremony Thursday recognized 40,000 square feet of research and lab space in Lexington’s Coldstream Research Campus. It’s called The CoRE, standing for Collaboration, Research, and Entrepreneurship. George Ward is the director of the research campus located off Newtown Pike.

“There’s very little laboratory space located in Lexington and if we were to grow high-tech businesses, we needed to provide that space,” said Ward.

Ward said there is a company already using about 7000 square feet of lab space in The CoRE. He noted 20 other private companies are incubating on UK’s campus with goals to move into this type of space. Ward added current lab work covers all kinds of advanced technology including 3D imaging of a person’s tooth.

“So, instead of taking the molds of teeth which a lot of people have gone through, they can use a device that is roughly the size of a toothbrush and get an exact measurement of the tooth and send that to a lab and then a replacement tooth can be made.”

Ward said the same company also produced oil and gas line technology to develop an advanced notice of a potential problem.

Ward said a good growth spurt is happening at Coldstream through the live, work, plan, innovate environment. That includes the opening of a 260-unit apartment complex.
