Coldplay support 'graceful' Eurovision star James Newman as they beg fans to stream song

Coldplay's Chris Martin offered his support to the UK's Eurovision entry James Newman, hailing him as "graceful" in defeat as he called for fans to stream his song.

Last Saturday, the UK landed bottom of the leaderboard once again, with James' song Embers earning not a single point from either the public or the judges at the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest.

Despite the tough result, the 35-year-old took it on the chin and celebrated as the televote revealed he had gained nilch from the public, throwing his beer into the air.

At the final, which took place in Rotterdam after the Netherlands won the competition in 2019, the UK landed behind Germany, which earned three points for dressing up a hand making dubious gestures on stage.

When James' result was announced, the crowd burst out in applause as he jumped up and sloshed his drink about in celebration.

His reaction garnered praise online for being a good sport - and he also appears to have caught the attention of Coldplay.

The band's official Twitter shared a list of films, songs and books for fans to have a watch, listen and read to.

Among those also happened to be James' sing Embers as Chris Martin not only mentioned the song, but praised James for being "so graceful" over his defeat.

The 44-year-old singer wrote: “I enjoyed watching Eurovision.

“In solidarity with those who enable victory by being defeated, please consider streaming “embers” by James Newman, who was so graceful about it all.”

The tweet, which received nearly 175 thousand likes and almost 75 thousand retweets, was well-received by the Eurovision performer who also retweeted the supporting message.

James added four praying hands emoji to the original tweet.

Britain’s Eurovision performance might have been the biggest defeat of the contest, but it did earn its place as one of the most memorable moments of the night.

It also climbed to the top of the iTunes charts as fans attempted to get the hit trending.

“Embers” has currently been watched 2.8 million times on YouTube.

It comes after James shrugged off the loss in his first interview since the competition, saying: "What can you do? We went there, we tried our hardest.

"The best thing was when the crowd went absolutely nuts when they said nil points!"

Speaking to Lorraine Kelly, he admitted that he couldn't tell how well he would do as he was "being really positive" on the night.

"You just can't tell, can you? Writing songs for people, you cam't tell if it's gonna connect with people," he said. "It was such a great time, I wouldn't have changed it for the world."
