Cold wave sees mercury plunge in northern Japan's Hokkaido

People walk in freezing Sapporo on Friday morning as the strongest cold wave on record covered the sky above Hokkaido, with the mercury reading minus 12 C. The Hokkaido town of Oketo marked minus 22.7 C at dawn. The cold weather will hit the Tokyo metropolitan area Saturday, with snow expected during the day across a vast area including Tokyo. Heavy snow is forecast even in the inland Kanto region. The Meteorological Agency said minus 24.4 C, the coldest air temperature since records started in 1957, was measured 1,500 meters above Sapporo on Friday morning.
