Cold water poured on Andrea Radrizzani's biggest Leeds United ambition

Andrea had a dream - it was to return Leeds United to the European elite.

It remains his dream, but achieving it is proving more difficult than winning in London, which coincidentally is part of the problem.

There are six sides situated in London currently in the Premier League, and there are likely to be seven next season. If Newcastle continue their slide into the second tier, absolving Scott Parker of a first relegation on his managerial CV, and Brentford hold their nerve this time around, that would mean seven away trips to the capital in 2021/22.

But that is not Leeds United's most pressing issue at the moment.

The Premier League table paints an interesting picture. It has been described as a league which has leagues within it.

Despite Liverpool's six consecutive home defeats, they are only just on the precipice of slipping into the second division, within the Premier League.

That is of course, mid-table.

Beneath the top six, there lie six or seven teams who could quite easily be categorised as mid-table, based on previous top flight campaigns and their performances this season.

Leeds have shoehorned themselves into this select group, somewhat unceremoniously as a newly-promoted outfit, placing 11th after 27 matches.

There is no real danger of relegation, despite the team's form, and Europe is a distinct improbability, with a ten-point gap - or chasm - to contend with. In the next 11 games, Leeds face ties against Manchesters City and United, as well as Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool.

Andrea Radrizzani is outspoken at times, and has made no secret his desire to help Leeds compete within the division above mid-table.

Leapfrogging the six or seven teams in the third and final division within the Premier League - those threatened by relegation - is not discussed enough. It is a huge achievement that in Leeds' first top flight campaign for sixteen years, the team have at no point been in the bottom three.

However, in this new-look Leeds United, heads are tilted upward.

Breaking into the European places may have seemed a pipe-dream, but the reality of doing so is much starker now Leeds are aware of what that entails.

This season, Bielsa's men have only accrued 11 points from 15 games against opposition in the top half - an average of 0.7 points-per-game.

Contrast that with Leeds' record against teams below them and the picture is much rosier: 24 points from 12 games - an average of 2.0 points-per-game.

Leagues within leagues has never been such an apt expression. As a general rule, Leeds dominate the teams below them, but succumb to those above.

The task for next season is improving their record against sides around them, whilst continuing to dispatch of the teams below.

Despite West Ham United's European candidacy this season, they along with Southampton, Wolves, Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Everton are the sides Leeds are grouped with.

Slaying the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United will be a task for future Leeds United squads, and with that will come the realisation of Radrizzani's dream.

For now, the next step is beating teams Leeds count as equals.
