Cold forecast for upper Thailand until Jan 2

Cool to cold spells will cover the North and Northeast regions of Thailand with temperatures dropping by 5-8 degrees Celcius from today until Jan 2, the Thai Meteorological Department said in its 11am announcement on Sunday.

The temperature drop is influenced by a strong high-pressure system covering upper Thailand until Jan 2 while the westerly trough is moving into the North. The weather in the North and Northeast will be cold to very cold, with temperatures dropping by 5-8 degrees Celcius. Temperatures on mountain tops will be 3-13 degrees Celcius during the period.

The cold days will be accompanied by outbreaks of thundershowers in some areas.

Temperatures in the Central region, including Bangkok and its vicinity, and the East will also drop by 3-5 degrees Celcius during the period.

There will be more rain in the South with some heavy downpours. The first affected will be Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan, followed by other provinces southward.

In the Gulf of Thailand, strong winds with 2-3 metre-high waves are likely in the Gulf of Thailand. All vessels are advised to proceed with caution, and small boats to remain ashore until Jan 2, the department announced.
