Cold case murder investigation leads police to extradite man from NSW

Queensland Police have arrested a New South Wales man as part of an ongoing murder investigation into the disappearance of Jay Brogden in north Queensland more than a decade ago.

Mr Brogden, 21, has been missing since April 2007.

He was last seen shortly after 7:30pm at Reefo's Resort in Cannonvale, near Airlie Beach, before leaving that address on foot.

His body has never been found but information received this year led homicide detectives to believe he was murdered.

Today investigators extradited a 33-year-old man from Sydney to Brisbane, for breaching parole over a separate stabbing incident in Airlie Beach in 2009.

Detectives believe the man can assist with inquiries into Mr Brogden's disappearance.

It comes after an appeal for new information was launched by police earlier this month, which included a billboard and a $250,000 reward and indemnity offer (not for the principle offender).

Detective Inspector Damien Hansen said the billboard did lead to today's arrest but officers were still seeking information from the public.

"Although we are pleased with the information we have received, we still know there are people out there with knowledge of what happened to Jay Brogden and we urge them to talk to us now," Inspector Hansen said.

"The indemnity in place will only apply to those who come forward before we make an arrest for murder."

A 2015 coronial inquest into Mr Brogden's disappearance found flaws in the initial police investigation and ruled his death was likely the result of "foul play".

The inquest heard Mr Brogden had a fight with his girlfriend on the day he disappeared and that he had previously received death threats from the woman's former partner.

The investigation is continuing.
