Cold callers are targeting homes pretending to be checking for coronavirus

Scammers have been targeting homes claiming to be "checking houses for coronavirus".

The cold calling scam has happened in Blackpool, though it could inspire others to try a similar tactic.

It's believed the aim of the callers is to try and gain access to people's properties.

Lancashire Live reports Blackpool Council's Trading Standards are advising residents to not let the bogus callers into their property under any circumstances.

They have also advised residents to make elderly neighbours and friends aware of the scam.

The fraudulent trick comes after 12 more cases of coronavirus have been confirmed , taking the UK total to 51.

A spokesperson for Blackpool Council said: " Blackpool Trading Standards have received a report of cold callers claiming to be checking houses for Coronavirus.

"This is a scam to gain access to your property. Do not, under any circumstances, let them in.

"If you have elderly or vulnerable relatives/ friends/neighbours - please do make them aware."

The warning has also been echoed by Lancashire County Council 's Trading Standards.

Anyone with information about the incidents are asked to contact Trading Standards on 0808 223 1133.

Alternatively, residents are urged to contact police on 101 or 999 if they feel threatened.

Symptoms of coronavirus

Coronavirus is a type of virus. As a group, coronaviruses are common across the world.

Common signs of infection include:

  • respiratory symptoms
  • a high temperature
  • fever
  • cough
  • shortness of breath
  • breathing difficulties

Though displaying these symptoms does not necessarily mean you have the virus.

The symptoms are similar to other illnesses that are much more common, such as cold and flu.

In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.

Generally, coronavirus can cause more severe symptoms in people with weakened immune systems, older people, and those with long-term conditions like diabetes, cancer and chronic lung disease.

Standard recommendations to prevent the spread of infection include regular hand washing, covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing.

The NHS believes it's unlikely the illness can be spread through things like packages or food.

Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing.
