The arrival of the cold snap means temperatures are only expected to rise a few degrees above freezing to 3C and there could be some sleet later on.

But so far there is no sign of the snow which is falling in the surrounding counties of Somerset and Gloucestershire and closed parts of the M5 in Devon.

According to the BBC weather forecast, the grey start to 2021 looks set to continue but the Met Office say there will be sunshine on Saturday morning for anybody who fancies getting out the house to enjoy the frosty conditions.

The BBC forecast says: "New Years Day will be mostly cloudy and chilly with some spots of rain or sleet possible at times but a lot of dry weather too. A moderate northerly wind.

"Mainly cloudy and dull conditions continue into the evening with low cloud and the chance of the odd shower. Clearing from the north overnight."
