Cold and bright weather in the North East but rain could return later this week

Heavy downpours could arrive in the North East later this week as the bitterly cold weather continues.

The UK is in for another wet and unsettled week with more rain forecast around the country.

Met Office meteorologist Sophie Yeomans said a weather system moving across Europe will cause a "fair amount" of rainfall across England and Wales throughout the week.

"It is going to be an unsettled week in terms of rain," she said.

The rain was forecast to reach Northern Ireland first on Sunday evening before hitting Wales and north-west England later in the night and then spreading across the rest of the UK into Monday morning.

However, the North East is expected to remain dry for the first half of the week.

Overnight frosts are expected however, with daytime temperatures struggling to reach 7 or 8C.

Despite the cold, it will be sunny and bright this week.

There is a chance of more persistent showers by the time we reach Thursday, however.

Ms Yeomans said rain warnings may be issued later in the week as rivers remain swollen, adding: "Some catchments in the north are still sensitive at the moment."

Snow could fall in Wales later in the week, Ms Yeomans added, but there is no sign of snow so far in our region.

The coldest night of autumn was recorded in Altnaharra in the Scottish Highlands on Saturday night where the temperature dropped to -7.1C.
