Colchester town centre closed over 'dangerous' building amid fears of collapse

Police have closed off Colchester town centre this afternoon over fears surrounding a "dangerous building".

Emergency services, including crews from Essex County Fire and Rescue, who were called to the scene after concerns were raised over the "integrity of part of a building."

People have been told to avoid the area between Southway and Culver Street West while they deal with the incident.

Police have also asked people to avoid the area.

In a tweet, an Essex Police spokesperson said: "Please avoid Colchester Town Centre.

"Supporting @ECFRS with a dangerous building and Head Street closed."

Another spokesperson added: We are on scene of an incident in Head Street, #Colchester, after we received concerns over the integrity of part of a building.

"Head Street is closed between Southway and Culver Street West while we, and officers from @ECFRS and @yourcolchester are on the scene."

Essex Police officers at the scene have confirmed that the road will be shut for the rest of the day.

Head Street is one of the main roads in Colchester town centre.

It's a significant retail and travel centre, with an Odeon cinema and Nando's restaurant situated along the road.
