Colac man accused of murdering three-month-old son granted bail

Scott Hammond has been charged with charged with murder and child homicide.

A 27-year-old man has been committed to stand trial over the death of his three-month-old son Braxton Hammond.

Scott Hammond, from Colac, south-west of Melbourne, has pleaded not guilty to murder and child homicide after a four-day committal hearing in the Geelong Magistrates Court.

Three-month-old Braxton was found unresponsive at his parents' home on October 15, 2011.

He was airlifted to hospital but died nine days later.

The infant suffered a fatal head injury, rib fractures and a leg fracture.

The court on Friday heard from National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome professor John Alexander via videolink from the United States.

Professor Alexander told the court the infant's injuries did not seem to be the result of an accident.

"It appears there's evidence of impact, but the injuries are most consistent with some type of violent shaking," he said.

"Pre-mobile children don't get injuries like these without the absence of adult involvement."

Partner ruled out as suspect

Detective Leading Senior Constable Leigh Smyth, from the Homicide Squad, told the court Mr Hammond's partner Nikita Cook had been a person of interest until 2013.

"Professor John Alexander was able to rule out Ms Cook as a suspect because of the timing of the injuries Braxton sustained," Senior Constable Smyth said.

The prosecution alleges Mr Hammond shook Braxton to death after Ms Cook went for a drive with her friend.

The court had previously heard Mr Hammond did not want children and was violent towards Ms Cook during pregnancy.

Under cross examination, Ms Cook said she had never seen Mr Hammond hurt her children.

Mr Hammond was granted bail to face a directions hearing in the Supreme Court on December 11.
