Coinbase has introduced a major redesign of its Advanced Trading platform under what it calls "System Update," marking a broader shift toward a multi-asset trading structure that combines crypto, equities, derivatives, and tokenized instruments in a single environment. The rollout adds new investment tools, expanded trading categories, and infrastructure aimed at unifying liquidity across global markets, according to announcements shared by the company.
The update includes the introduction of an SEC-regulated AI investment advisor, alongside plans for stock trading, prediction markets, perpetual futures, and tokenized equities. The platform is also extending access to crypto derivatives for U.S. users, adding another layer to its regulated product lineup, according to crypto.news.
Coinbase said the upgraded system will eventually allow users to trade nearly 10,000 stocks and ETFs, crypto assets, prediction markets, and derivatives from a single account. The company is also expanding its use of $USDC as a settlement and collateral asset across multiple products, positioning it as a central component of trading and rewards infrastructure.
A key element of the redesign is the creation of unified global liquidity pools across both U.S. and international trading venues. The aim is to consolidate order books across markets and support cross-margining between spot and derivatives positions, according to CoinDesk. The structure is designed to streamline execution across different asset classes within the platform.
Coinbase is also expanding its derivatives offering, including stock perpetual futures and ETF perpetual contracts with leverage, alongside thematic index contracts tied to sectors such as artificial intelligence and defense. The company said some instruments may include pre-IPO exposure through perpetual-style contracts referencing private companies.
The rollout timeline shows the platform's gradual expansion over the past several months. Stock and prediction markets began launching in December 2025, followed by commission-free stock and ETF trading in February 2026 for eligible U.S. users. Integrated decentralized trading access was expanded to multiple jurisdictions in March 2026, according to Bitcoinist.
The latest System Update extends those additions into AI-assisted investing and expanded multi-asset access, although Coinbase said availability will depend on regulatory approvals and jurisdictional eligibility. The company did not provide fixed launch dates for all features, stating that deployment will occur in stages.
The platform shift places Coinbase closer to a hybrid brokerage model that integrates crypto exchange functions with traditional financial instruments. Binance continues to lead global crypto trading volume with a broad derivatives offering, while Kraken focuses on regulated crypto markets and institutional services, though neither currently combines equities, tokenized assets and AI advisory tools within a unified retail account structure at the same scale.
The expansion also comes at a time when financial markets are adjusting to broader geopolitical uncertainty, including ongoing conflicts and supply chain disruptions across multiple regions. These developments have increased attention on alternative settlement systems and digital asset infrastructure, particularly stablecoin-based rails such as $USDC, which Coinbase is positioning at the center of its trading ecosystem.
