Coimbatore receives second highest rainfall in Tamil Nadu

COIMBATORE: Coimbatore received the second highest rainfall in the state next to Nilgiris in the 24 hours ending Sunday morning. According to a statement issued by state disaster management minister K K S S R Ramachandran, Coimbatore received 19.91 mm rainfall as against the average of 2.71mm from 16 districts that received rainfall. Chinnakallar received the highest rainfall in Coimbatore. Nilgiris topped the state receiving 28.54mm rainfall.

The southwest monsoon itself was bountiful for the state. Tamil Nadu as a whole had received 269 mm rainfall during the SW monsoon period from June 1 till August 6, which was 102 % more than the normal rainfall received during the season, Ramachandran said in the statement.

While there was no loss of human life or livestock in Coimbatore, two houses were partially damaged and three were fully damaged because of the heavy rain. All the dams in the region were close to their full level.

While Mettur dam had its full reservoir level of 120 ft, Bhavanisagar had 102 ft out of total 105 ft, Amavaravthi had 87ft of 90ft and Aliyar 117ft of 120ft. All the reservoirs continued to receive copious inflows and much of the inflow was discharged.

The statement said 1.1 lakh cuses was released from Mettur dam while 13,000 cusecs was let out from Bhavanisagar dam. The statement said districts along western ghats would receive mild showers on August 9 and 10.
